Stampa turca

  • At the beginning of March 2016, court-appointed trustees enter the headquarters of the Zaman newspaper, the most widely distributed in Turkey, escorted by the police. They deliver dismissal letters to the director and other journalists. The newspaper is effectively placed under government control. The reason for this decision, as has already happened in other circumstances, is the accusation of terrorist propaganda since the newspaper is considered a direct emanation of Hizmet, the movement created by Fetullah Gülen, a former ally of Erdogan, on which now hangs an arrest warrant for having created secret structures parallel to the state ones (La Repubblica: Sevgi AkarçesmeElif ShafakAbdullah Bozkurt - The Indipendent)
  • The destruction of the newspaper's server destroyed the links to the article texts. The pages of Zaman, however, will not be deleted. The names of the journalists (many arrested after the coup attempt on July 15) and the titles of the articles remain as a trace of the newspaper's work.
  • March 2018 Aydin Doğan, a secular entrepreneur disliking by Erdogan, sells the Hurryet newspaper to Yildirim Demiroren (effectively dismantling the media sector of his holding), after the closure of Zaman, the most important in Turkey. After this sale, 21 of the 29 newspapers (90% of the copies published) with a national circulation are part of the close circle around the head of state. The Turkish democratic system, already undermined from its foundations, is further weakened. (some comments from Hurryet reporters: M. YetkinB. YinancYusuf KanliF. Bildirici). In October, editor-in-chief  Murat Yetkin leaves the newspaper.
