Pietro Matricardi is Full Professor at the Sapienza University of Rome.

His research activity is focused on the development of new polysaccharide-based materials for drug delivery and for tissue engineering applications. In this regard, he carries out research on macro and micro hydrogel systems, on tablets, microspheres and self-assembled polysaccharide nanohydrogels. Among the various hydrogel systems, particular attention is paid to Interpenetrated Polymer Networks based on polysaccharides or polysaccharides / synthetic polymeric systems. Inside the Matricardi Lab, in 2016 the special unit "PolyRome" was founded with the aim of assisting public and private companies in the development of new products. "PolyRome" specializes in the physical-chemical characterization of polymeric matrices for biomedical, cosmetic and food applications. Prof. Pietro Matricardi is currently a professor of "Pharmaceutical Technology" and former professor of "Macromolecules", and "Safety in the Laboratory", at the Faculty of Pharmacy and Medicine, Sapienza University of Rome. He is also President of the Degree Course in "Applied Pharmaceutical Sciences". Prof. Pietro Matricardi has achieved his M.Sc. (Degree) in Chemistry (1989) and his PhD (1993) at the La Sapienza University of Rome. In 1993 he joined the Lepetit group at the Anagni site within the analytical development unit. In 1994 he moved to the risk assessment unit of INAIL, the Italian public company for insurance against accidents at work and occupational diseases. In 2004 he joined the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Technologies, Sapienza University of Rome, playing the role of Researcher and Teacher.

Prof. Matricardi has published over 90 papers in peer-reviewed international journals, participating as a speaker at numerous conferences and writing a book and some book chapters. Pietro Matricardi is currently President of the CRS Italy Chapter (Controlled Release Society). He is also a member of the Society for Biohydrogels (member of the board of directors), ADRITELF (Association of Italian Teachers and Researchers of Technology and Pharmaceutical Legislation) and SIR (Italian Association of Rheology).
