PHD IN ENVIRONMENTAL AND EVOLUTIONARY BIOLOGY PROGRAM

The PhD in Environmental and Evolutionary Biology Program is hosted by the Department of Environmental Biology.

The PhD Program provides advanced scientific training in all fields of taxonomy and systematics, plant developmental biology, palaeobotany, human paleontology and anthropology, molecular genetics, evolutionary biology, biochemistry and physiology, applied biology and biotechnology, plant pathology, pharmaceutical botany, ecology, ethology, conservation biology and ecological modelling.

According to the well-known axiom of Theodosius Dobszansky "Nothing in biology makes sense except in the light of evolution", all disciplines of the PhD Program are rooted within the common framework of evolutionary biology and are tightly interconnected by the complex structural and functional relationships between humans, plants, animals and the environment.

In this interdisciplinary context, the training of PhD students will be also addressed to a professional qualification requiring an integrated approach system, with special attention to a number of activities in the fields of evolution and environment.

The PhD in Environmental and Evolutionary Biology Program is composed of four Curricula:

The Scientific Board is composed of 39 researchers and is supported by an enlarged Board of experts to ensure the plurality of knowledge.

During the three years of the PhD Program the PhD students will attend advanced courses, seminars and other educational activities. Students are also encouraged to spend a period in a high-quality Research Institute abroad.

Once a year, each PhD student will present a summary of the results of his/her research activity for formal approval by the Scientific Board. The PhD Program includes the requirement to write a final thesis either in English or in Italian and to publish the results of the PhD work on peer-reviewed scientific journals.
