Research Interest After the Master’s degree obtained with a thesis on «L’ultimo Gentile. Sul sentimento e la morte», the following PhD project focuses on the Italian Philosophy of the XX century which I intend to highlight through a theoretical and historiographical research. Specifically, the research consists in retracing the history of the «Giornale critico della filosofia italiana», from 1920 to 1946, years in which Giovanni Gentile was the journal’s director. With this project I want to: promote journals as ‘spaces for philosophical culture’, promote the study of archival sources and unpublished documents, rebuilding the cultural, political and historical outline of Italy in that period. Finally, I want to dedicate attention to people and currents that have made the history of Italian Philosophy. Research interests: Theoretical Philosophy, History of philosophy, Italian Philosophy of the 20th and 21st centuries, Ontology and Metaphysics, Italian idealism

Title Times of the Self. Subjective temporality and acceleration.
Supervisors Prof. Virginio Marzocchi, Prof. Stefano Petrucciani,
Research Interest After my first thesis on Paul Virilio's dromologie, my main interest has become the issue of “Technique” in Western philosophy (in particular from the twentieth century until contemporaneity). These studies have led me towards Günther Anders’s philosophy (which was the subject of my second thesis's discussion) and, more generally, towards debates concerning Entfremdung and Verdinglichung. The current topic of my Ph.D. research project is Hartmut Rosa's social acceleration theory and a reconstruction of the concept of “lived temporality” (in this sense, I assume time as a dimension that could be better “experienced” in various way than something instrumentally measured).

Title The reactions to Voltaire's Anti-Pascal in the XVIII century
Supervisors prof. Daniele Guastini, prof. Daniele Guastini, prod. Annalisa Schino
Research Interest In the next three years I will develop a theme that I just sketched out in my graduation thesis, which concerned the two different interpretations of Pascal’s Pensées given by Voltaire and David Renaud Boullier (1699-1759), a protestant minister of Utrecht. My courrent research wants to analyze, for the first time in an exhaustive way, the writings composed in the XVIII century against Voltaire’s Anti-Pascal, that can be considered a project aiming at destroy the pessimistic vision of life of Pascal. In doing so, I will focus on Boullier's works, in particular on his Défense de Pascal, which reveal a wise and unjustly forgotten author.

Research Interest The research project originates from the philosophical reflection of Karl-Otto Apel. The purpose is to deepen the fundamental subjects of Apel’s thought, particularly the concepts of ultimate foundation, truth and reality that are at the bottom of Transcendental Semiotics that he developed. The post-metaphysical foundation of reason endorsed by Apel concerns both the theoretical and practical sphere: the consensual theory of truth refers to the regulative idea of an ideal communication community in which is in force the equality of rights of all the speakers. So theory of truth and discourse ethics are closely related: to examine the relationship between the truth claim of speech acts, that refers to the objective world, and the rightness claim, that refers to the intersubjective world, is one of the primary aims of the research. Interest areas: philosophy of language, political philosophy, moral philosophy

Research Interest My project is about novel concepts of chance in biology. At the molecular and cellular levels, the focus is on the functional role of stochastic elements - read as epigenetic factors - in explaining complex biological systems. This part of the analysis will draw on the work of Conrad H. Waddington, in particular referencing his concept of developmental noise. At the macro-evolutionary level, enquiry is directed towards analyzing how the concept of chance is modeled in explanations of evolutionary trends (e.g. extinction). Attention will focus on discussion surrounding the legitimacy of the extrapolation thesis, with particular regard to the concepts of stochasticity and contingency. The paleobiological revolution of the 1970s and 1980s and the work of Stephen J. Gould will be a touchstone for this part of the project. The final aim of analysis at these two levels is to argue that chance could be seen as a key element in the structure of biological explanation Fields of interest: philosophy of biology, history of biology, epistemology, philosophy of science, molecular and cellular biology, philosophy of epigenetics, paleobiology

Research Interest My research interests concern Friedrich Nietzsche’s philosophy. After completing my master's degree with a thesis on "will to power ", I now wish to concentrate on the concept of genesis of the State and law, in both the middle phase and late phase of Nietzsche's thought, according to two different perspectives. That is, the theoretical aspect of his philosophy (revolving around the Wille zur Macht theory) and the historical background in which it was developed. In this manner I will strive to analyze the juridical and political aspects that define his philosophy, such as State and law theory but also, amongst others, power, decadence, justice, penalty, guilt, culture and civilization.

Research Interest My main areas of interests are Italian philosophy and the history of marxisms. In particular, my research aims to reconcstruct the history of the Italian Marxist tradition between 1956 and 1968, analyzing how the various debates and different currents of tought, that arise in that period, question the concept of Marxist culture and philosophical tradition, linked to historicism and gramscism, and how they initiate a more general reflection on the "geophilosophical" problem of the relationship between culture and national State, also activating the comparison of Italian Marxism with other philosophical movements, such as existentialism, phenomenology, "negative thought" and structuralism. At the same time, my project aims to investigate the different transformations that took place in those years and that affect the analysis of the relationship between Marxism and Hegelian dialectics, the link between philosophy, science and politics and the role of intellectuals in the parties. Research Interest The research focus is the examination of prophetism and the identity of the role of the prophet, having as a background an investigation of Thomas Hobbes exegete and interpreter of the Old and New Testaments. Through a critical and comparative approach of the Hobbesian sources, I will try to examine the narrative choices of Hobbes in assessing the importance of prophetic revelation and its political implications. The analysis will also focus on the problem of the identity of the true and the false prophet evaluating the political response in a controversial historical context, full of superstitions and fears, like the English seventeenth century. With a view to widening the development of the research, it is not possible to exclude the possibility of considering whether, even today, the problem of prophecy and false revelations may have declinations in philosophical and political interpretation in the contemporary historical context.

Research Interest My research interests lie chiefly in the history of metaphysics and of theory of knowledge in Greek Neoplatonism, with special consideration to the relationship between doctrinal elements of Platonic and Aristotelian origin. My current research is concerned, in particular, with the reception of the Aristotelian noetics in Plotinus’ philosophy. It sets out to analyse the different ways in which the Aristotelian doctrine of intellect is revised, adapted and appropriated at the different levels of the Plotinian metaphysical hierarchy, while keeping in mind as well the history of this doctrine through the earliest centuries of the imperial age, so far as this history is known to us. The main text I put to contribution in this inquiry is Plotinus’ treatise Enneads V 3, transmitted with the title On the hypostases endowed with knowledge and on what lies beyond them, of which I hope I will be able to provide a new Italian translation with full commentary.

Research Interest My research project aims to provide a comprehensive perspective about origins, explanation and possible developments of the concept of symbol within the wide framework of contemporary hermeneutics thinking; the research especially focuses on examination of the conception of symbol formulated by the thought of Luigi Pareyson and Paul Ricoeur. Firstly, in this respect, it is fundamental the comparison with the perspective opened by Ernst Cassirer, through the concept of symbolic form and the anthropologic definition of animal symbolicum; secondly, it is decisive the reconsideration of culture carried out by psychoanalysis, particularly within its branch developed by Carl Gustav Jung. Finally, the relationship between symbol and truth, as well as between symbol and interpretation, finds its representative expression in myth; therefore, my research project deals with comprehension of myth and symbol belonging to German Romanticism, especially within the thought of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Friedrich Schelling, essential references for the theories of symbol and for the contemporary hermeneutics reflection. Research Interest My research lies within that philosophical pluralistic naturalized perspective according to which a partnership and some dialogue between biological, cognitive and psychological sciences on one side and human, historical and social sciences on the other side are necessary to shape an accurate empiric description of the human beings. In my thesys I will explore the interactions between the individuals and the «ecological niches» they live in so to explain human subjectivity construction taking the latest declinations of the theory of evolution as the epistemic framework. The aim is to offer a representation of the subjectivity as the product of recorsive interaction of material structures – a body with physical and neurobiological characteristics, an enviroment, other bodies – and immaterial – culture, society, linguistic and experiential relations with other human beings and the enviroment – as they cannot be completely differentiated.

Title The audience reception of the critical edition of Gramsci’s “Notebooks” in the circles of Italian intellectuals in 1975-1989
Supervisors proff. Marcello Mustè, Stefano Petrucciani,
Research Interest My research interests cover a wide range of aspects of philosophy of politics viewed in terms of the theory of the human being’s political activity as it has been conceptualized through ages by philosophers of the Antiquity, those of medieval scholastics, passing through the renewal of the classical thought during the Renaissance period, as well as in the XVIIth century, in the Enlightenment epoch, during the Romanticism (XIXth century) and in the Twentieth century until our times. In this context I am particularly attentive to the modern Italian philosophers of the XIXth and the XXth centuries, such as Antonio Labriola, Rodolfo Mondolfo, Benedetto Croce and, of course, Antonio Gramsci, who I consider as one of the most important Italian philosophers of the Twentieth century, in the universal sense, the one that exerts an undeniable impact within the precincts of interpretation and actualization of Marxism, as well in its purely philosophical connotation as in terms of the theorization of the political practices (filosofia della prassi – philosophy of practice), in Italy and all around the world. I have chosen to write my Phd thesis on the subject of the reception of his philosophy in the circles of Italian intellectuals of the Seventies and the Eighties of the last century, howbeit aware of the essential vitality of the global impact of his theoretical thought and of its incredible political outcome and potential democratic capacity, the one that has been interpreted, actualized and intellectually prolific in the countries called “subaltern”, in the postcolonial sense. Otherwise, I am comprehensively interested in the philosophy of language, in its post-structuralist upshots in Umberto Eco’s thought, in the platonic “logocentrism” by Jacques Derrida, in Michel Foucault’s discourse theory and Michail Bachtin’s dialogical philosophy. In the same philosophical realm Emmanuel Lévinas’s altruism, Hannah Arendt’s assets on totalitarianism are naturally positioned, as well as the elaboration of the critical theory by the philosophers such as Theodore W. Adorno, Jürgen Habermas and Max Horkheimer of the Frankfurt School, where the Marx’s social theory is extended towards the scientifically pluralistic interpretation. Research interests: theoretical philosophy, political theory, political philosophy, aesthetics, Italian philosophy, philosophy of science, philosophy of language, semiotics, Marxism, critical theory, political science, ancient philosophy, medieval studies, scholastics, anthropology of text, elizabethan theatre, philosophy of art, poststructuralism, postcolonialism, cultural studies, philosophical analysis of cinematic and theatrical language, science of literary and specialized translation, didactics and linguistics, philosophy of law

Following the lessons of Walter Benjamin, Gilles Deleuze and Giorgio Agamben, I want to return the concept of limit to its condition of threshold, zone of passage or zone of indiscernibility: a nomadically inhabited space, a place of conceptual migration and weaving of affects, lines, singularities, flows and rhizomes.

Title Dag Prawitz’s Theory of Grounds
Supervisors prof. Cesare Cozzo, prof.ssa Gabriella Crocco
Research Interest Philosophy of Logic, Mathematical Logic. My PhD thesis concerns the so-called theory of grounds, proposed by the swedish mathematician, logician and philosopher Dag Prawitz. The theory of grounds is a philosophical reflection upon, and a formal semantics for, the notion of valid inference. Inferences can be conceived of as those deductive steps of passage from premises to conclusion that one usually performs in proofs or, more generally, in reasonings. The theory of grounds aims to answer a question that philosophy of logic and mathematical logic have posed since their very birth: why and how some of such steps exert an epistemic compulsion, thereby compelling us to accept their conclusions as correct if we accept their premises? Prawitz's explanation develops within a mathematical language based on the notions of grounds – intuitively, what one is in possession of when in a state of justification – and of operation on grounds – interpreting the effective functions involved in the Brouwer-Heyting-Kolmogorov intuitionistic construction semantics. The pivotal idea is that inferences are performed by applying an operation on the grounds that one considers oneself to have for the premises, with the intention to get a ground for the conclusion – an inference being valid when the intention is fulfilled. In this context, I focus on an issue of decidability around the relation “x is a ground for y”, on the possible ways to understand the expression “decidable”, and on the potentially problematic impact that the issue has on the general theoretical framework.

Research Interest The research is directed to the analysis of the videogame medium through an aesthetics perspective understood as philosophy of sensitivity and sense. Following a line of thought starting from the kantian aesthetic theories and passing through the critical interpretation of them offered by Emilio Garroni and the "roman aesthetic school," the research try to investigate, among other things, the relationship that exists between the user and the opera, the characteristics of the experience that is lived in the dialogue established with a digital program. In correlation with analysis also direct , for example, to the relationship between user and generally art work try to highlight some of the unique aspects of the aesthetic experience as possible to within a historic landscape in profound change such as the present, which is increasingly dependent on digital technologies and virtual spaces.

Research Interest Areas of interest: Migration, Moral Philosophy, Political Philosophy, Phenomenology and Ecology. My research interests are to study the relationship between ethics and migration, with special reference to the three main areas: the admission of immigrants, the treatment of immigrants and cohabitation of cultural pluralism in society. This research study focuses on the first aspect, in relation to the two philosophical currents between them conflicting: communitarism and liberalism. The goal of the research is: to make a critical analysis at ethical level regarding the migration today, to propose an integrated approach in order to consider simultaneously the two philosophical currents. In the end, the research intends also to indicate and to propose a path, which gives the social life a possibility to intersect with the criteria of justice and respect for common values of peace and tolerance.

Title Epistemology in Lucrezio
Supervisors prof. Emidio Spinelli, prof. Emidio Spinelli, prof. Nunzio Allocca
Research Interest The aim of my research project is to rebuild the epistemology in Lucretius’ De rerum natura. My intent is to develop a pioneering work that includes for the first time all the various aspects of the theory of epicurean knowledge: canonic, multiple explanations, semiotic and analogical inference, demonstration and theory of language. Regarding these issues, particularly, the purpose of the study is to establish the contours of the doctrinal relationship between Lucretius and Epicurus and examine the originality of the Latin poet and his personal contribution to the doctrine held by the Kepos. In a more general perspective, my research aims focus on the different philosophical realities characterizing the Hellenistic period, especially the Roman philosophy. Regarding this stage of Ancient philosophy, I take into account the theories of knowledge endorsed by the different schools of thought and the host of problems related to them. I am also interested in matters of logic and science philosophy.

Title A critical perspective on movies from the Frankfurt school to the contemporary debate in North America
Supervisors prof. Stefano Petrucciani, prof. Stefano Petrucciani, prof. Stefano Velotti
Research Interest The main focus of my project is to analyze the lively debate on the role of movies in North America, where in recent years there has been a strong “return to the origin” of the early thinkers of the Frankfurt School. In my research I want to show how, in contemporary advanced capitalism, media and movies absolve a function of regulating society by enforcing strict ideological adherence to the dictates of the market.  Research areas: Aesthetics, Critical Theory, Social Studies, Cinema, New Media

Title Being, Thinking, Knowing: Fichte and Reinhold about the inconceivability of the Absolute
Supervisors proff. Pierluigi Valenza, Marcello Mustè,
Research Interest My research is about the connection between Knowing and Being in K.L. Reinhold’s – and C. G. Bardili’s – rational (or logical) realism and in Fichte’s Wissenschaftslehre following the atheism dispute (Atheismusstreit) of 1799. After an historical reconstruction of the complex relations of the three authors, the focus of the research will be the link between the key-concepts of the rational realism and the transcendental structure of the image-knowledge that Fichte develops particularly in WL 1804-II and WL 1805. Another confrontation element is the relation between philosophy and life related to the faith.

Title Conscience and Religion in Hobbes: an Ethical and Political Perspective
Supervisors Prof. Piergiorgio Donatelli, Prof.ssa Annalisa Schino,
Research Interest Subjects of interest: Moral Philosophy, Ethics, Bioethics. Starting from a background of general interests in 17th century British history and philosophy, and in its confluences in contemporary moral philosophy, my present research aims to explore, at the first, the contentious relationship between Thomas Hobbes (1588-1679) and religion. I shall try to point out what a reinterpretation of Hobbes’s philosophy and its religious account of conscience can suggests about issues spreading in our time, regarding religion and public life. Analyzing the transition of such a moral and political contents in contemporary ethics, the work’s goal shall consist in defining “hobbesian” philosophical topics capable to be accepted in a current democratic context. These topics may be able to settle issues of conscience about themes such as life, end-of-life and sexuality.

Research Interest My research interests are structured around the history of metaphysics, trying to identify the main issues that underline the structural changes within the evolution of metaphysics. More specifically, my interest lies in the scholastic's approach to metaphysics and how this science evolved to its modern conception; focusing on Immanuel Kant. As a result, my research investigates a classic scholastic's problem in metaphysics: the truth as adaequatio rei et intellectus, as also originally conceived by Kant himself.

Title Tragedy of culture and redemption in Unamuno and Ortega y Gasset
Supervisors prof.ssa Irene Kajon, prof.ssa Irene Kajon, prof. Stefano Bancalari
Research Interest The current research aims to deepen the thought of the Spanish philosophers Miguel de Unamuno (1864-1936) and José Ortega y Gasset (1883-1955) through the themes of tragic and redemption, which are considered "urgent" in European philosophy of the first half of the twentieth century. In particular, the purpose is to reconstruct the concepts of tragic and redemption in their configuration as tragedy of culture – using a Simmelian expression – and redemption of the world, understood not only in the religious sense, but also and above all from a socio-ethical and historical perspective. The effort, therefore, will be to move through the reflection of the two authors – which focuses on the problem of life – to give it a place in the European intellectual landscape (particularly in relation to the German area) and reconstruct its original philosophical contribution.

Research Interest Starting from a philosophical and historical scientific analysis of the work of Charles Darwin, my research focuses on the notebooks (in particular the C and the D) of the author of the Origin of Species, in an attempt to compare them with ideas and the theories presented in the notebooks of two other famous protagonists of the evolutionary debate of that time, the naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace and the geologist Sir Charles Lyell. Through a careful study of these notebooks it will be possible to retrace and offer a complete picture of the journey taken by the minds of these three authors, developing a study able to offer a new perspective both on the parallel development of their reasoning paths, detailing their steps, contents, motives, differences and influences (philosophical, political and scientific), both on the composition and genesis of their great evolutionary works (whose first buds we find precisely in their notebooks), thus clarifying one of the most significant moments in the history of evolutionism.
