PhD Overview

1st Year
 
Courses
In the first year PhD students attend the series of classes organized by the PhD Faculty Board and write papers on the topics of the courses. They also attend a course chosen among those offered by the PhD Faculty in the graduate program (Laurea magistrale). Students are also required to participate in workshops, reading groups and conferences. 
 
Deadlines
June: First draft of the research project; discussion of their work with the PhD Faculty Board.
October: An index of the PhD dissertation and a paper on the research topic are discussed with the PhD Faculty Board in view of the admission to the second year.
 
2nd Year
 
Courses
In the second year PhD students attend the series of classes organized by the PhD Faculty Board and write papers on the topics of the courses. Students are also required to participate in workshops, reading groups and conferences, and are suggested to spend a period of time abroad in a foreign academic institution.
 
Deadlines
June: A conference is organized where students present and discuss a paper on the advancement of their dissertation; the paper and the presentation are then discussed and evaluated by the PhD Faculty Board with each student.
October: Index, abstract and a chapter of the dissertation are discussed with the PhD Faculty Board in view of the admission to the third year.
 
3rd Year
 
Courses
Students participate as teacher’s assistants in a course chosen among those offered by the PhD Faculty in the graduate program (Laurea magistrale).
 
Deadlines
June: Index, abstract and further work on the dissertation are discussed with the PhD Faculty Board.
October: A first version of the complete dissertation is submitted to PhD Faculty Board and discussed.
December: Final evaluation of the dissertation by the PhD Faculty Board in view of the admission to the final exam or of the grant of a further year in the PhD program.
