The Bazzichelli Herbarium

Giorgio Bazzichelli (1924-2011) was Professor of Botany and Algology at Sapienza University of Rome from 1983 to 1996. He graduated in Medicine, but being passionate about Natural Sciences, he chose Botany as his main research discipline. His personality is characterized by an original scientific approach and by a culture so wide as to allow him to easily deal even with humanities and philosophical disciplines. He left a large herbarium which, however, is still partly disorganized and with unidentified specimens, in spite of the efforts he made well beyond his retirement. Remarkable is the amount of taxonomic, ecological and phytogeographic information reported on the herbarium sheets, as well as well the drawings that illustrate morphological characters of the plants useful for their correct identification.
