Collections

The Sapienza Herbarium houses multiple collections, acquired over time through collections of the institute/department staff, purchases or donations of private collections, and exchanges with other institutions. It also contains numerous type specimens and specimens that have been the subject of genomic studies.

Precise rules regulate the consultation of the exsiccata: only the staff working in the Herbarium is authorized to enter the internal rooms to collect the specimens requested by the users.

The collections are currently organized in the following main herbaria:

 

MAIN HERBARIUM COLLECTIONS

 

The Roman Herbarium (19th and 20th century)

Geographical area: Latium, following the limits defined by Pirotta and Chiovenda in the publication "Flora romana" (1900-1901).

Material: 68,555 specimens of phanerogams

The General Herbarium (19th and 20th century)

Geographical area: Italy, except for Latium, and other countries.

Material: about 366,000 specimens of phanerogams, about 72,000 specimens of cryptogams

The Cesati Herbarium (18th and 19th century)

Geographical area: Italy, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, other European and non-European countries.

Material: about 350,000 specimens, including phanerogams (32,000 species) and cryptogams (17,000 species)

The Montelucci Herbarium (20th century)

Geographical area: especially Latium and Tuscany.

Material: more than 11,000 specimens almost exclusively of phanerogams

The Anzalone Herbarium (20th and 21st century)

Geographical area: Lazio, Abruzzo, Marche, Trentino-Alto Adige

Material: 41,194 specimens, including phanerogams (40,118) and pteridophytes (1,076)
