The effectiveness of teamwork can influence the success and safety of activities where multiple users must interact to achieve a common goal. In high-risk fields, a team's collaborative ability is particularly crucial; consider, for example, the crew piloting an airplane or surgical teams in the operating room.
Although teamwork is critically important, it can currently only be assessed through observation or based on participants' self-reports, lacking true and reliable measurement methods to evaluate its effectiveness.
Objective evaluation through this type of measurement on team work would provide team management and member performance with an additional reference parameter allowing for appropriate interventions to maximize interaction effectiveness and reduce the possibility of making mistakes.
Measuring individual psychophysiological states can contribute to teamwork evaluation. Based on "real-time" data related to physiological reactions, which are inherently objective compared to self-assessments and subjective evaluations, this approach would allow for the efficient and rapid detection of Human Factors (HF) (such as stress and attention) of the operator and any performance changes.
The BRAINORCHESTRA research project will develop a framework to combine socio-psychological traits of the team at Policlinico Umberto I hospital with neurophysiological, behavioral, and subjective data to advance towards a synthetic assessment of cooperation levels among surgical team members.
