Fiorenza Deriu


Fiorenza Deriu is Associate professor of Sociology at the Department of Statistics of Sapienza University of Rome. She holds specialization degree in “Sources, Methods and Techniques for Social Research” and a degree in Political Science from Sapienza University of Rome. In the past, she has carried out several research projects (e.g., about gender differences in employment, work-life balance, violence against women, women capabilities, resilience and empowerment) at national and international level, funded by local bodies, national institutions, and the EU Commission. She has been for 10 years (from 2005 to 2015) the scientific coordinator of the “Observatory on violence against women and their children” of the Province of Rome, funded by ‘Solidea’, the first Institution of Gender and Solidarity in Italy. She has been engaged as thematic and lead expert for 5 years in two projects respectively on Active and Healthy Ageing, within the European Urbact Programme.

She is currently scientific coordinator of a Summer School on “Statistics for Gender Equality: Methods and Techniques to study the violence against women” at the Eastern Africa Statistical Training Centre (EASTC) of Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania, in the context of a project of international cooperation funded by Sapienza University of Rome.

She is director of the Master in “Big Data. Statistical methods for the Knowledge Society” in the Department of Statistics of Sapienza University of Rome, since May 2016.

Her research focuses on the following main issues: women capabilities, resilience and empowerment; violence against women; gender differences in employment and in time use; gender differences in active ageing. Her current research interests include also social housing connected to the social investment theory; policy measures to contrast poverty; big data and social research.
