The Roma Tre – Sapienza PhD joint program in Linguistics aims to provide PhD students with a solid and up-to-date knowledge on main topics concerning languages and how they work across time and space (from the diachronic perspective, related to the Indo-European languages or to the Italian language, to synchronic theoretical and applied approaches, with reference to the different languages of the world but also to Italian).
Areas of interest:
Historical Linguistics (offered by the Sapienza Rome University)
The curriculum of “Historical linguistics” focuses on methods and issues pertaining to traditional studies on ancient Indo-European languages,  but  also  on  the  analysis  of  language  change  from  antiquity  to  the  Middle Ages,  and  on  language  contact  as  animportant trigger of the diffusion of language change.

Italian Linguistics (offered by the Sapienza Rome University)

The  curriculum  of  “Italian  linguistics”  focuses on  methods  and  issues  pertaining  to  Italian  linguistics and  dialectology.  This curriculum  therefore  includes  linguistic  analyses  concerning  texts  from  early  Vulgar  up  to contemporary  ages,  dialectological studies and Italo -Romance lexicographic studies. The general perspective will also be open to traditional studies in general and historical linguistics.

General and Applied Linguistics (offered by the University Rome3)

The curriculum of “General and Applied linguistics” focuses on methods and issues pertaining to synchronic and applied linguistics. PhD students will be introduced to the theories and methods of synchronic linguistics, as well as to features and categories of languages.  As  for  applied  linguistics,  the  curriculum  focuses  both  on  language acquisition  and  on  L2  teaching/learning.  PhD students will also be introduced to corpus linguistics, explained by means of innovative methods.

Acoustic Phonetics (offered by the University Rome3 and fund provided by the “Fondazione Ugo Bordoni”)

The curriculum of “Acoustic Phonetics” develops a relevant area of linguistics. It takes advantage of ascientific partnership with "Fondazione Ugo Bordoni", which provides the PhD students with a high qualification in Acoustic Phonetics and its applications.
It also trains PhD students both in research and in self-employed professions, such as consultants to public and private institutions– courts, lawyers, companies working in media or in the advanced tertiary sector.
