GREETINGS FROM THE DEAN

Dear Students and Dear Colleagues,

the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry which I have the honor to chair, is a large community made up of 560 teachers and over 10,000 students.
It includes about 150 training courses, 43 degree courses and over 100 postgraduate courses between I and II level Masters, Specialization Schools and PhD courses.
We are a Faculty represented by many scientific excellences and which plays an important role at both regional and national level.
We are constantly growing given the gradual increase in registrations in recent years, especially in single-cycle courses, but also constantly evolving to respond to the changing educational, welfare and scientific needs of the health sciences sector. An example is the Degree Course in Medicine and Surgery HT (High Technology) organized by our Faculty with the contribution of teachers from the Faculty of Pharmacy and Medicine, Psychology and Medicine, Information Engineering, Computer Science and Statistics and Civil and Industrial Engineering. This course is the expression of a multidisciplinary and integrated approach to health and disease problems with the aim of training professionals oriented to disease prevention, rehabilitation and health promotion within the community and the territory and with a strong interest in the principles of "precision medicine" and "Network Medicine".
Another example is the degree course in Sciences, Cultures and Gastronomic Policies for Wellness. Also in this case the objective is to train new professional figures in strategic sectors with a large impact on eating behavior and on the state of well-being of the population. These two courses, recently established, are examples of new training models, but this represents only the beginning of a phase of change that should affect all study courses.
In my opinion, it is necessary to pursue a training project in which young people have the possibility, in addition to basic programs, to acquire in parallel paths the fundamental notions of sectors such as telemedicine, sensors, robotics, applied information technology, digital health; fundamental principles that must favor the training of new doctors capable of interacting with other disciplines and entering a constantly changing labor market.

I begin my mandate in the midst of an emergency phase that is imposing significant changes in social and professional life. Although late, everyone has now understood that well-being, health and efficient disease management are a top priority for any country system.
It is our task to respond to the new challenges dictated by the emergency phase with innovation and "mission-oriented" research.
We must be protagonists in the so-called "third mission" through proposals aimed at the transfer and enhancement of knowledge, interaction with the territory and industry.
In all of this, we must ensure that teachers are put in a position to express themselves in the best possible way by bringing out excellence, eliminating bureaucratic obstacles and procedural delays.
At the same time, we must create the conditions for young people to emerge and fulfill themselves in the place where they were trained, avoiding escapes abroad which represent a real defeat for the educational system.

I conclude with a warm greeting and with the hope, all together, to be protagonists of a new historical phase.

The Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry

Prof. Domenico Alvaro
