Submission Preparation & Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission’s compliance with all the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

Title of the manuscript

Annals is an indexed journal, so you must indicate (in the “metadata” section of the submission panel) the title, subtitle (if any), abstract and keywords in English

If the manuscript is in a language other than English, you may indicate the title in the original language in the front page of manuscript to be uploaded to the platform (as indicated in Templates A and B).

Files to be uploaded

Authors are required to prepare and upload to the platform two separate files (see templates A and B), indicate between two and four potential reviewers in the section “Comments for editors”, and optionally, a cover letter to the Editor.

More in detail, please upload to the platform the following:

A. A cover page (TEMPLATE A) containing:

    1. The name and affiliation of each author. One author must be designated as the corresponding author with e-mail and full postal address. Author(s) name(s) must be spelled out with first names instead of initials. Affiliation(s) must contain complete details: please clearly indicate (i) name of the Department of affiliation (if any), (ii) name of the University/Institution, (iii) Country name of the University/Institution.
    2. Corresponding author. Clearly indicate who will handle correspondence at all stages of refereeing and publication, also post-publication. This responsibility includes answering any future queries about Methodology and Materials. Ensure that the e-mail address is given and that contact details are kept up to date by the corresponding author.
    3. Nature of the manuscript. Please, select among: Research paper, Critical review, Notes and discussions, Book review.
    4. Title of the paper in the original language.
    5. Abstract in English.
    6. Key words in English (lower-case letters).
  1.

B. A fully anonymised manuscript (TEMPLATE B). The manuscript must be submitted with title in the original language, abstract in English, keywords in English (lower-case letters), body of paper in the original language, list of references, figures, tables and related captions. Please follow this checklist for anonymising your manuscript for double-blind peer review:

  1. Do not include author names, affiliations or pictures of the authors anywhere in the manuscript and/or in any supplementary information files.
  2. Do not include any names in any file names and ensure document properties are also anonymised.
  3. Do not include any author names or institution information in the Acknowledgements section of your manuscript. Author names and funding information should be removed and can be re-added later in the peer review process.
  4. If your submission requires an ethical statement, please do not include this on the manuscript (as it may reveal aspects of your identity). Instead, please provide the ethical statement in the section “Comments for Editor”.
  5. When referring to your own work within the paper or reference list, avoid using terminology that might reveal your identity. Avoid phrases such as 'we have previously shown (reference)'. Instead use 'as previously shown (reference)'. Please anonymise any references to your own unpublished thesis work.'.
  6. At revision do not sign your author response, rebuttals, or appeals with author names.

In the section “COMMENT FOR EDITOR” authors:

  1. Must indicate between two and four potential reviewers - including name, expertise, e-mail. Please indicate reviewers who are located in different countries/regions from the author group. Also consider other diversity attributes e.g. gender, race and ethnicity, career stage, etc. Finally, you should not include existing members of the journal's editorial team, of whom the journal is already aware. You must not communicate with your potential reviewers, nor should you suggest reviewers who are colleagues, or who have co-authored or collaborated with you during the last three years. Editors do not invite reviewers who have potential competing interests with the authors. The final decision on referees is by the Editor, who may choose different reviewers from those suggested.
  2. Write a cover letter to the Editor (optional).
