General information

Starting from the 2018-2019 academic year, it is being provided the Bachelor Degree in Sustainable Building Engineering (L23 Class). This degree aims to equip students with the knowledge and the necessary skills to ensure a sustainable future both for existing buildings and for those yet to be designed and built, as the pursuit of the objective of sustainable development continues to be one of the major global priorities of our era. The main purpose of this degree will be to update the traditional and world-renowned, Italian civil and architectural engineering skill set, with increasing concern towards environmental protection and sustainable development. In that context, besides Italian students this degree is intended also and for the most part for foreign students, especially those coming from countries where Italian engineers have designed and built major public and private building buildings.

To achieve this aim the Degree must guarantee a high-level scientific and technological education, and the facility to design, plan and manage technical solutions for the many and complex situations which arise in the context of sustainable development, both in building and modification of the territory, through the application of the following principles:

  • Lowering the demand for and consumption of energy by new and existing buildings
  • Development of passive design techniques which make use of specific climatic    conditions and available natural resources to favour sustainable development
  • Reusing or recycling building components and materials
  • Extending the lifetime/life cycle of products and buildings
  • Risk-free return of materials to the natural cycle
  • Implementing a policy of sustainable use of the territory with participatory planning and    design
  • Reducing urban sprawl, promoting urban renewal and protecting natural areas

This degree is especially conceived to train professionals capable of taking on different projects both at a local and international scale. At the design phase, a sustainable building engineer will be ready to develop and control sustainable design strategies in architecture and urban planning. During the construction process, the Sustainable Development Engineer will be able to use sustainable and recycled materials to minimize waste flows and to prevent eventual damage to the environment. In the capacity of managing buildings the Sustainable Development Engineer will know how to reduce the demand for and consumption of energy in buildings, how to alternatively use other natural resources, also renewable.
