HYPERSONIC FLIGHT AND REENTRY TRAJECTORIES

Credits: 9

Learning objectives
The experience of the Space Shuttle flights and the steadily increasing interest for commercial suborbital flights is focusing attention toward very high speed atmospheric trajectories.  This is the field of hypersonic flight mechanics, a combination of orbital and atmospheric flight mechanics. This Course is devoted to entry dynamics and will provide the students with classical and recent methods in atmospheric entry. A unique opportunity is given to the students , offering them the elements of the practical experience of several entry flights performed in different Soyuz and Shuttle missions. The Course is organized as follows: Hypersonic and Newtonian flow,  Aerodynamics heating, Reentry Trajectories and Reentry Corridor, Patched asymptotic solutions and explicit real time reentry guidance, Hypersonic Flight with lift modulation, Reentry practical flight experience: hints to the modeling and control of hypersonic flight.
