BACHECA:

MAGISTRALE II - 2017/18
The course begins on Monday 2nd October and will follow this timetable:
Monday 15.00 – 17.00   Aula 109
Friday     17.00-19.00  Aula Laboratorio 3
Ricevimento: Monday 17.00 and Friday 14.00

Those unable to follow the course should try and see me duringricevimento for information about the course.
Please note that there will be no lesson or ricevimento on Monday 16th October as there will be a sessione straordinaria of the written exam strictly for those graduating in the IV session a.a. 2016-17 (i.e. the session programmed for December 2017-January 2018) and no one else. This exam will be held in Aula 202 at 13.00 and those intending to take it should email me no later than October 10th.

There are two components to the Magistrale II course:
a) Italian into English translation
b) Summary and stylistic analysis of an opinion-piece article on a subject of current interest

The first semester will consist largely of (a) and the first esonero will be a translation exercise. The second esonero will consist of (b), which will be prepared in the second semester. Both components will be part of the non-frequentanti written exam.
The translation work in class will involve stylistic problems of various kinds and the passage chosen for the esonero will reflect that. For the non-frequentanti that part of the exam will be used much more as a straightforward language/grammar test, using material of the kind to be found in the book by Jennifer Pudney indicated below.
The kind of material used for (b) will tend to be written wholly or in part in non-standard English. The aim of the work will be to reproduce the essential argument of the passage in a summary written in standard English, and then discuss the rhetorical effect of all the linguistic elements that have had to be discarded in writing the summary.
Those who cannot attend classes can get some idea of the kind of material that will be used in the exam by looking at past posts on my now-discontinued blog batessapienza.blogspot.com. They are also advised to come and see me duringricevimento hours. For frequentanti the oral examination will consist of a discussion of the material that has been used in the course, which will tend to focus on aspects of current British and
American life that are strikingly unlike anything that can be found in present-day Italy. Fornon-frequentanti the oral examination will consist of a discussion in English of an article from an Italian newspaper that they will be given to read at the examination.

I cannot emphasize too strongly that most students who fail do so because of their language level and for no other reason. For translation and general English fluency students are urged to study Jennifer Pudney: Written English for Advanced Learners (privately published) – available at Feltrinelli International.

LCLT II O-Z - 2017/18
II-year students with surnames between O and Z can choose between my course and that of my colleague Prof Bilardello. As both will be held on Monday and Friday it should be possible to create an acceptable balance of numbers between the two courses. Mine will begin on Monday 2nd October and will follow this timetable:
Monday  13.00-15.00   Aula 202
Friday      15-17.00        Aula T01
Ricevimento: Monday at 17.00 and Friday at 14.00
Please note that there will be no lesson or ricevimento on Monday 16thOctober.
