Background

In the last years, various studies have identified a particular type of a Roman atrium or cauaedium domus¹

The structural scheme of this domus joins, in the first place, the concept of the development of the Greek habitat, and secondly, the use of the Roman atrium space as the central distribution area of the house. But, the discussion of this central space about if it is an atrium, a porticated court or a reduced peristyle is long and complex and needs a methodical and comparative study.

The outcome is a particular type of hybrid house named in a very preliminary manner "tetrastyle courtyard house".

Casa 34. Empúries (Cortés 2014)

This new typology has been recently identified through a long process of historical studies of domestic spaces, the diversity of examples excavated and the use of new technologies applied to the archaeological record. The deep knowledge of the different types of ancient houses has better allowed appreciating the cultural interchange (Greek and Roman) of this new type of house. The "tetrastyle courtyard house" has been documented in Roman cities with a Greek past in diferent parts of the Roman Empire and in different chronologies.

This data is very revealing of the strong presence of this model in Roman society, but there are still many Roman cities with a Greek stage without an accurate study of its various models of habitat. It requires a more systematic study of the different examples provided by archaeology to present to the proper appreciation of this new type and its variants. The analysis of more case studies will lead to a comprehensive understanding of this household and its impact on Roman society.
