The single-cycle Study Programme that students must attend to achieve the five-year Masters Degree in Building Engineering-Architecture aims to form qualified professionals who, having mastered the methodologies and operational tools to plan works in the field of building Engineering, architecture and urban development, also possess the ability to efficiently supervise the correct and complete implementation of a project.
The Programme was established during the AY 1998-99 as an evolution of the Degree in Building Engineering (which used to already be part of Civil Engineering), to combine the engineering skills that are typical of that specific Programme with a broad knowledge of architecture-related subjects.
In 1998, after a thorough preparatory activity, the Degree Programme was recognized by the European Union Committee that is responsible for the "Degrees that follow Community directives". Thanks to this recognition graduates can carry out projects in Europe, also in the field of architecture. Since the Degree has been recognized as an in-depth Programme in both fields graduates may admitted both to the Order of the Engineers and to the Order of the Architects in Italy, after having passed the specific State exams.
During the AY 2001-02, following the implementation of the 509/99 Ministerial Decree, and in 2009-10 following the implementation of the Ministerial Decree 270/2004, the Study Programme was transformed and adapted, while maintaining the necessary characteristics to be recognized at a European level. In 2015-16 further changes were made to reflect the needs of the job market and of an education that required a stronger focus on the scientific subjects.
The Masters Degree Programme, which is organized so to guarantee a balanced distribution between theoretical and practical subjects (in compliance with Directive 2005/36 / CE of the European Parliament and of the European Committee of the 7th of September 2005 regarding the recognition of professional qualifications, and the related recommendations), focuses on the cognitive, analytical and proactive aspects and contents of a project.
The main educational outcome is to provide students with knowledge and skills in the field of building engineering, architecture and urban development, thanks to a teaching approach which focuses on the scientific and technical preparation that considers the project as a synthesis process and a fundamental and qualifying moment of the building process.
