 Programme

The course aims to further develop the four skills with particular emphasis on the comparative analysis of Italian and English grammar. At the end of the course students are expected to be able to apply their grammar knowledge to producing correct written English versions of Italian texts. Students will also develop oral paraphrasing skills and will be required to give a group presentation . The final exam will be a  translation from Italian to English and a series of exercises based on discourse/grammar  analysis. Students will  also  sit a short oral  exam. 

Students are expected to   do a considerable amount of work as preparation for lessons. Every two-hour lesson requires at least two hours of preparation as private study. Material will be uploaded onto Google Classroom. Here is the code: fen5far

Programmes - Text Analysis & Translation

Depending on options chosen in your Piano di Studi, you will need to attend either the first or the second semester or both. Fuori corso students need to do the Language exam with Prof. Wardle and the Text Analysis lettorato exam with me. 

Semester 1 - Text Analysis - 36 hrs. (this course is linked to 1048129 – English Language III)

Programme

The course aims to further develop the four skills to C1 level with particular emphasis on writing and speaking. Students will develop the skills to carry out a linguistic analysis of persuasive texts. During the course students will also work on developing oral skills and will give group presentations on a persuasive text of their choice.  The final exam will be a brief academic essay based on the textual analysis of an advertisement.

Programmes - Text Analysis & Translation

Depending on options chosen in your Piano di Studi, you will need to attend either the first or the second semester or both. Fuori corso students need to do the Language exam with Prof. Wardle and the Text Analysis lettorato  exam with  me. 

Semester 1 - Text Analysis - 36 hrs. (this course is linked to 1048129 – English Language III)

Programme

The course aims to further develop the four skills to C1 level with particular emphasis on writing and speaking. Students will develop the skills to carry out a linguistic analysis of persuasive texts. During the course students will also work on developing oral skills and will give group presentations on a persuasive text of their choice.  The final exam will be a brief academic essay based on the textual analysis of an advertisement.

 Students are expected to   do a considerable amount of work as preparation for lessons. Every two-hour lesson requires at least two hours of preparation as private study. Material will be uploaded onto Google Classroom. Here is the code: 6ksuvyp (MLI 3 TEXT ANALYSIS a.a. 2023/24).

Non attending students should consult Google Classroom and CLA page on a regular basis for course materials.

 

 

 

 Semester 2 - Translation - 36 hrs. (this course is linked to 10592750 – Lingua e Traduzione inglese III)

 Programme

The course aims to further develop the four skills to C1 level with particular emphasis on the comparative analysis of Italian and English grammar. At the end of the course students are expected to be able to apply their grammar knowledge to producing correct written English versions of Italian texts. Students will also develop oral  paraphrasing skills and will  be required to  give a group  presentation on a comparative analysis of a feature of their choice of the English/ Italian  grammar systems. The final exam will  be  a brief translation ( approx. 200  words) from Italian to  English.

Changing Group aa. 23-24:  students requesting to change group firstly need to find a student from  the other group to swap with then send a single email (DO NOT WRITE SEPARATELY TO BOTH TEACHERS) to the teacher of their original group copying it to the teacher of the proposed group explaining the reason for the change. A timetable clash must be fully specified and you should specify whether English is your  first or second language. This must be done within the first FOUR lessons of the semester. Teachers will confirm the change only after reviewing timetable options and class sizes. Those who have not found a pair can be added to a list and lettori can supervise changes at the end of the fourth lesson.

N.B. If you do not intend to attend courses regularly, there is no reason to change group. The lettorato exam is the same for all, attending in either group and non-attending students alike. The Magistrale 1 lettorato exam is skills based and not having mastered the required skills will leave students unprepared for the tasks involved.

 Programme

The course aims to further develop the four skills to C1 level with particular emphasis on the comparative analysis of Italian and English grammar. At the end of the course students are expected to be able to apply their grammar knowledge to producing correct written English versions of Italian texts. Students will also develop oral  paraphrasing skills and will  be required to  give a group  presentation on a comparative analysis of a feature of their choice of the English/ Italian  grammar systems. The final exam will  be  a brief translation ( approx. 200  words) from Italian to  English.

Students are expected to   do a considerable amount of work as preparation for lessons. Every two-hour lesson requires at least two hours of preparation as private study.

Programme

The course aims to further develop the four skills to C1 level with particular emphasis on writing and speaking. Students will develop the skills to carry out a linguistic analysis of persuasive texts. During the course students will also work on developing oral skills and will give group presentations on a persuasive text of their choice.  The final exam will be a brief academic essay based on the textual analysis of an advertisement.

MLI 3 Sessione Straordinaria 2022 - 

Open only to students who are graduating in July 2022, students with disabilities, pregnant students, students enrolled in the 4th year or more, working students. You will need to provide proof of which category you belong to. 10th May 2022 1pm - 3pm in Laboratorio didattico 4 (3rd floor, Marco Polo building)  This exam is only for students from last year (2020-21 or earlier) or the MLI 3rd year Language taught in the first semester this year (2021-22) - we will examine both parts, Wardle + Hillan, together. Students from  MLI 3rd year Translation  must wait until at least June before sitting the exam. To enroll for the exam, you need to send  Prof. Wardle  an email between 13th April and 23.59 on the 24th April, with all the following information: your name, surname, matricula number  and  uniroma1.it email address. You also need specify which exam you intend to sit (3rd year triennale Mediazione Language / Translation, 'straordinaria' category you belong to (see above) and whether you have already sat the exam before. Programme

The course aims to further develop the four skills to C1 level with particular emphasis on  the comparative analysis of  Italian and English grammar . At the end of the course students are expected to be able to apply their grammar knowledge to producing correct written English versions of Italian texts, completing cloze texts and structural transformation exercises. Students will  also  develop  oral  paraphrasing skills and will  be required to  give a group  presentation on a comparative analysis of a feature of their choice of the English/ Italian  grammar systems. The final  exam  will  be  a brief translation ( approx. 200  words) from Italian to  English.

Students are expected to   do a considerable amount of work as preparation for lessons. Every two-hour lesson requires at least two hours of preparation as private study.

MLI 3 TRANSLATION EXAM Sessione Straordinaria 2021

Date:  Thursday, 11^th November - 09,00 -12,00

 

The exam will be written and will be online (open- book exam).

 3 hours  

Part 1

You will be given a passage from Palomar with its translation, and asked to identify 3-5 features in the texts that relate to the translation choices made by William Weaver. You should be able to relate these features to the broader context of translation studies, mentioning any of the theories and strategies discussed during our classes and/or presented in any translation textbook you have used to study for the exam. You can choose to divide the text into a table format and comment on any features that emerge.
Part 2

You will be given a passage to translate taken from a news outlet (approx. 200wds).

 

The written paper will be followed by an oral exam (via zoom) which will be a discussion of your written paper and topics covered during the course.

There will also be exam sessions in January/February 2022).

 

Exam procedure  

The exam will be sent to you via email (uniroma addresses only allowed) on the day of the exam at 09,00.  At 12,00   completed papers must be submitted via email to both Prof. Wardle and myself.  Papers submitted late will not be corrected. Oral exams times will be published once exam bookings have closed. You will be emailed the link to the ZOOM   oral exam meeting. Please have proof of identity ready to show to the exam commission before starting your exam.

Students are required to write an academic essay based on the analysis of an advertisement. (open-book exam)

The written paper will be followed by an oral exam (via zoom) which will be a discussion of your written paper and topics covered during the course.

There will also be exam sessions in January/February 2022).

Group changes are not envisaged as access to Edificio Marco Polo is controlled by the university administration and students will be admitted in rotation by matriculation  number, strictly following the pre-established alphabet divisions. Programmes - Text Analysis & Translation

Depending on options chosen in your Piano di Studi, you will need to attend either the first or the second semester or both. Fuori corso students need to do  the Language exam with  Prof. Wardle ( Language and Gender) and the Text Analysis lettorato  exam with  me. 

Semester 1 - Text Analysis - 36 hrs (this course is linked to 1048129 – English Language III)

The course aims to further develop the four skills to C1 level with particular emphasis on writing and speaking. Students will develop the skills to carry out a linguistic analysis of persuasive texts. During the course students will also work on developing oral skills and will give group presentations on a persuasive text of their choice.  The final exam will be a brief academic essay based on the textual  analysis of an advertisement.

 Students are expected to   do a considerable amount of work as preparation for lessons. Every two-hour lesson requires at least two hours of preparation as private study.

 Semester 2 - Translation - 36 hrs (this course is linked to 1025916 – Lingua e traduzione inglese III)

 Programme

The course aims to further develop the four skills to C1 level with particular emphasis on  the comparative analysis of  Italian and English grammar . At the end of the course students are expected to be able to apply their grammar knowledge to producing correct written English versions of Italian texts, completing cloze texts and structural transformation exercises. Students will  also  develop  oral  paraphrasing skills and will  be required to  give a group  presentation on a comparative analysis of a feature of their choice of the English/ Italian  grammar systems. The final  exam  will  be  a brief translation ( approx. 200  words) from Italian to  English.

Students are expected to   do a considerable amount of work as preparation for lessons. Every two-hour lesson requires at least two hours of preparation as private study.

Students are required to write an academic essay based on the analysis of an advertisement. (open-book exam)

The written paper will be followed by an oral exam (via zoom) which will be a discussion of your written paper and topics covered during the course.

The exam will be sent to you via email (uniroma addresses only allowed) on the day of the exam at 15.30.  At 18,30   completed papers must be submitted via email to both Prof. Wardle and me.  Papers submitted late will not be corrected. Oral exams times will be published once exam bookings have closed. You will be emailed the link to the ZOOM   oral exam meeting. You will be given a passage from Palomar with its translation, and asked to identify 3-5 features in the texts that relate to the translation choices made by William Weaver. You should be able to relate these features to the broader context of translation studies, mentioning any of the theories and strategies discussed during our classes and/or presented in any translation textbook you have used to study for the exam. You can choose to divide the text into a table format and comment on any features that emerge.
Part 2

You will be given a passage to translate taken from a newspaper (approx. 200wds).

The exam will be held ONLINE on the following dates:

● Friday 2nd July

● Friday 9th July

Given the current situation with the pandemic, and the high numbers of candidates expected for this session, students are asked to make sure they are available on both dates. Once bookings have closed, they will be assigned to one of these dates and exam times will be specified.

Bookings open online: Monday, 6pm 21st June 2021. (See link on Lettori CLA pages) Bookings close: Sunday, 27th June at 6pm Late enrolments will NOT be accepted.

Candidates will need TWO devices to access the exam: a computer for Zoom and exam.net, and a tablet or smart-phone for Zoom. Students cannot do the exam with a single device only. It is the student’s responsibility to organise themselves technologically and to ensure a good internet connection. Students must login through Sapienza SSO. Use of private email accounts is not permitted.

Documents to be uploaded in ONE SINGLE PDF before the exam (there will be instructions about this on the enrolment form): (1) ID with photo. (2) Proof of enrolment in Laurea Magistrale.

Exam format: a WRITTEN exam consisting of two parts with a total duration of 180 minutes.

● Part One, paraphrase and summary writing activities ( 90 minutes)

● Part Two, an argumentative essay of 350-450 words based on the texts provided (90 minutes)

The exam will be written and will be online (open- book exam).

 3 hours  

Part 1

You will be given a passage from Palomar with its translation, and asked to identify 3-5 features in the texts that relate to the translation choices made by William Weaver. You should be able to relate these features to the broader context of translation studies, mentioning any of the theories and strategies discussed during our classes and/or presented in any translation textbook you have used to study for the exam. You can choose to divide the text into a table format and comment on any features that emerge.
Part 2

You will be given a passage to translate taken from a newspaper (approx. 200wds).

 

The written paper will be followed by an oral exam (via zoom) which will be a discussion of your written paper and topics covered during the course.

There will also be exam sessions in September and January/February 2022).

 

Exam procedure  

The exam will be sent to you via email (uniroma addresses only allowed) on the day of the exam at 15.30.  At 18,30   completed papers must be submitted via email to both Prof. Wardle and myself.  Papers submitted late will not be corrected. Oral exams times will be published once exam bookings have closed. You will be emailed the link to the ZOOM   oral exam meeting. Please have proof of identity ready to show to the exam commission before starting your exam.

MLI3 written and oral exams

Written Exam Tuesday, 27th April, 2021 - 15,30.

Exam description

Students are required to write an academic essay based on the analysis of an advertisement. (open-book exam)

Exam procedure  

The exam will be sent to you via email (uniroma addresses only allowed) on the day of the exam at 15.30.  At 18,30   completed papers must be submitted via email to both Prof. Wardle and myself.  Papers submitted late will not be corrected. Your oral exam will be based on an analysis of the paper you have submitted.  Oral exams will be on 28^th April; times will be published once exam bookings have closed. You will be emailed the link to the ZOOM   oral exam meeting. Please have proof of identity ready to show to the exam commission before starting your exam.

12 cfu students enrolled in academic year 2019-20 or earlier will continue with the 19-20 oral only exam introduced during the Covid health emergency. 6 cfu students from aa 2019-2020 or earlier may choose to take either written and oral exam (as described below), or the oral only exam. Students take the exam in pairs and will be asked to paraphrase part of an article followed by a series of exercises testing comprehension, knowledge of synonyms and the ability to transform sentences.

 6 cfu students enrolled in academic year 20-21 may take the Sessione Straordinaria exam  if they fall into one of the categories below and are required to do the  paraphrase & summary writing section of the written exam which will be followed by an oral test on a different day. The oral exam will be taken in pairs. The day and time of your oral exam will be communicated at the time of the written exam. The Examnet link for the written exam will be communicated  on Zoom at the time of the written exam.  THE SESSIONE STRAORDINARIA EXAM IS RESERVED FOR THE FOLLOWING CATEGORIES.  FIRST TIME STUDENTS HAVE TO WAIT TIL JUNE TO TAKE THE WRITTEN EXAM

  N.B. The exam format starting June 2021 will be standardised across all academic years and students (6 and 12 cfu) will take the written followed by an oral exam.

 

Booking procedure

Students will be able to book their exam via the link provided on Magistrale 1 lettori CLA pages on the day booking opens. Students will be asked to upload their ID and proof of enrolment in the Magistrale.

The stated level of the first year Magistrale exam is C1. As such those taking part need to display an advanced range of accuracy and complexity in their speaking or writing  not merely communication skills. Phonological and lexical ability will be tested in addition to comprehension.  

 

Please note the following:

(1) Have a computer, tablet, or smart phone with a reliable internet connection and a functioning camera + microphone. The audio on your device must also work properly, so you can hear the examining lecturer and the other student.

(2) The oral exam will be conducted on Zoom/ Webex. Make sure you download the app and are familiar with it before the exam.

(3) Have your personal identification with your NAME AND PHOTO and proof of enrolment in the programme ready to show at the start of the meeting.

(4) The code for the video meeting will be provided on lecturers' CLA pages before the exam.

Written exam: Magistrale 1 aa.20-21  6 cfu students:  paraphrase /summary writing activity

 Oral exam:   20-21 6cfu students will be asked to comment on items from their written exam individually and interact with their pair in a freer discussion

Oral exam:   19-20  6&12 cfu students. The oral exam is done in pairs. Students are given 10 minutes to read an unseen text before

being asked to summarise the salient points of their article. A freer discussion of some of the

points raised ensues during which both students are expected to contribute equally. The final

grade is a straight average of the marks given for the written and oral sections.

Programme

The course aims to further develop the four skills to C1 level with particular emphasis on the

comparative analysis of Italian and English grammar . At the end of the course students are expected

to be able to apply their grammar knowledge to producing correct written English versions of Italian

texts, completing cloze texts and structural transformation exercises. Students will also develop oral

paraphrasing skills and will be required to give a group presentation on a comparative analysis of a

feature of their choice of the English/ Italian grammar systems. The final exam will be a brief

translation (approx. 200 words) from Italian to English.

Students are expected to do a considerable amount of work as preparation for lessons. Every two-hour lesson requires at least two hours of preparation as private study.

MLI 3 Text Analysis - Written and Oral Exam   Winter Session

Written Exam Thursday, 14th January, 2021 - 14,00.

Exam description

Students are required to write an academic essay based on the analysis of an advertisement.

Use of dictionaries allowed.

Exam procedure  

The exam will be sent to you via email (uniroma addresses only allowed) on the day of the exam at 14.00.  At 17,00   completed papers must be submitted via email to both Prof. Wardle and myself.  Papers submitted late will not be corrected. Your oral exam will be based on an analysis of the paper you have submitted.  The oral exams will   begin on Monday 18^th January; exact times will be published once exam bookings have closed.  On the day of your oral exam, you will be emailed the link to the ZOOM exam meeting. Please have proof of identity ready to show to the exam commission before starting your exam. 

Booking procedure

 From 18^th December to 8^th January,2021. Send an email to maria.hillan@uniroma1.it stating surname, name and matriculation number and ID document as an attachment. No  exceptions will  be made for late booking.

Online Exams:  January 15th 2021 / February 5th 2021

 

6 and 12 cfu students enrolled in academic year 2019-20 or earlier will continue with the 19-20 oral only exam introduced during the Covid health emergency. Students take the exam in pairs and will be asked to paraphrase part of an article followed by a series of exercises testing comprehension, knowledge of synonyms and the ability to transform sentences.

 6 cfu students enrolled in academic year 20-21 may take the exam early in either the January or February sessions and are required to do either the  paraphrase / summary OR  academic essay writing section of the written exam which will be followed by an oral test on a different day. The oral, exam taken in pairs will take the following format: a discussion on the content of your written exam, summarising part of an unseen text and  a freer discussion of the topic of the text.

N.B. The exam format starting June 2021 will be standardised and all students (6 or 12 cfu / enrolled in 20-21 or before) will take the written followed by an oral exam.

Important dates

Online booking will open at midday on the 18th of December and close at midday on the 8th of January. No exceptions will be made for late booking.

Written exam format:

The oral exam is done in pairs. Students are given 10 minutes to read an unseen text before

being asked to summarise the salient points of their article. A freer discussion of some of the

As such those taking part need to display an advanced range of accuracy and complexity in their speaking, not merely communication skills. Phonological and lexical ability will be tested in addition to comprehension.

Programmes - Text Analysis & Translation

Depending on options chosen in your Piano di Studi, you will need to attend either the first or the second semester or both. Fuori corso students need to attend both.

Semester 1 - Text Analysis - 36 hrs (this course is linked to 1048129 – English Language III)

The course aims to further develop the four skills to C1 level with particular emphasis on writing and speaking. Students will develop the skills to carry out a linguistic analysis of persuasive texts. During the course students will also work on developing oral skills and will give group presentations on a persuasive text of their choice.  The final exam will be a brief academic essay based on the textual  analysis of an advertisement.

 Students are expected to   do a considerable amount of work as preparation for lessons. Every two-hour lesson requires at least two hours of preparation as private study.

At the end of the course students are expected to be able to apply their grammar knowledge to producing correct written English versions of Italian texts, completing cloze texts and structural transformation exercises. The final  exam  will  be  a brief translation ( approx. 200  words) from Italian to  English.

Magistrale 1  September Exam for academic years 2019-2020 or earlier.

The written exam for non-attending students will be held online beginning on September 25th from 14.00-17.00 . Further dates will be added for the oral exam.

Booking will open August 8th and close on August 18th at midday..

The stated level of the first year Magistrale 1 exam is C1. As such those taking part need to display a range of accuracy and complexity in their speaking, not merely communication skills. Phonological and lexical ability will be tested in addition to comprehension.  The written exam will consist of a paraphrase/summary writing activity for all students. 12cfu students additionally write a formal essay.

Please note the following:

(1) You must have a computer, tablet, or smart phone with a reliable internet connection and a functioning camera + microphone. The audio on your device must also work properly, so you can hear the examining lecturer and the other student.

    

    (2)  The written exam will be conducted on Exam.net

(3) The oral exam will be conducted on Webex/Google meet. Make sure you download the app.

(4) Have your personal identification with your NAME AND PHOTO and proof of enrollment in the Magistrale programme ready to show at  the start of  your exam on Webex. The exam can not begin until this has been done.

(5) The code for the  video meeting will be provided on lecturers' blogs on the morning of the exam.

(6) Please use your institutional email for all stages of the process.

I presume that you already know of this site. In order to revise basic language, start with the first course -  lower intermediate -  and then  do  the intermediate and upper intermediate ones. There is also a basic grammar reference section (click on “grammar” and options will appear).

You should also do the pronunciation and vocabulary sections.

This is a free site with excellent material for preparation for Cambridge exams. The exit level for Magistrale 1 students is C1 which is CAE. The link is for this exam.

This site contains news articles written in 3 different levels from the most basic to  the original  text. Summarise the articles and complete accompanying exercises.

One of the best ways to improve vocabulary is by reading. This is a site written by academics that analyses and discusses current events. Try to read at least 2 articles per day and learn any new words in context.

A collocation is when two or more words naturally go together and sound correct together.

Do the exercises and try to  use the collocations you learn in  your writing.

The exam will take the form of an oral exam in which a pair of students will be asked to quickly read and discuss an article which will be sent to you at the start of the exam. The duration of the exam for each pair of students will be 30 minutes.The stated level of the first year Magistrale 1 exam is C1. As such those taking part need to display a range of accuracy and complexity in their speaking, not merely communication skills. Phonological and lexical ability will be tested in addition to comprehension. 

Please note the following:
