Training plan
The 9 credits assigned for "the seminar and laboratory activities" are approximately subdivided as follows: 6 credits for seminar activities, or similar, and 3 credits for laboratory activities (performed in facilities provided by the PhD course). For the "training and research activities freely chosen by the student", the expected credits can be achieved by attending doctoral seminars, conferences, workshops and short courses in national and/or international contests, or through laboratory activities. The production of scientific publications will allocate credits whose amount will be determined by the tutor, according to the contribution provided by the author. Any Phd planned course, seminar and laboratory will be activated if an adequate number of students will show interest in it.

Thesis
The topic of the research/thesis will be defined in the second semester of the first year, on the student's indication and with the approval of the tutor and, later, of the PhD Board of Teachers. During the first year, students will deepen their knowledge on the chosen research topic, and will compile a related "state of the art"; the activity of documentation, study and introduction to the laboratory work will cover a commitment corresponding to 15 credits (including 3 credits of laboratory activities). Part of the required credit, on the advice and approval of the tutor and the PhD Board of Teachers, may be reached following conferences, workshops and short courses at other national and/or international organizations.

Tests
All the training activities will be recommended by the tutor, in accordance with the cultural address and the research/thesis subject chosen by the student, and will be approved by the Phd Board of Teachers. For the several training activities (courses, seminars, workshops, etc.), skill acquisition will be verified by the way of an oral presentation to the tutor. Each student must submit an annual report to the PhD Board of Teachers, previously approved by the tutor, concerning the carried out activities and the earned credits; the access to the following year shall be subject to the approval of the report by the PHD Board of Teachers.

Notes
The training plan for the first year is oriented to a first-level training and to an introduction to the scientific research (for a total of 45 credits, including 3 freely-chosen credits), as well as to the initial work related to the research/thesis subject chosen by the student (for a total of 15 credits). The first-level training will be performed by attending Master degree courses, in whole or in part, available in universities and scientific/research institutions, for a maximum of 9 credits. The total number of credits assigned to first-level training must be acquired within the first year of the PhD course, or, for the courses taught during the first semester of the academic year, no later than the first semester of the second year of the PhD course. The introduction to scientific research will aim to provide common general methods shared by all the PhD topics. The training will be completed by a laboratory activity with the aim of introducing the main features and aspects of the "life" typical of the experimental researches carried out at DIAEE department: the laboratories will be properly chosen based on the interest and the teaching paths identified for any PhD student. Any student has to gain at least 39 credits (including 3 freely-chosen credits) by attending courses offered by universities and PhD schools, in Italy or abroad. Further 6 credits have to be acquired by attending seminars, or by the way of similar activities. A part of the required credits, on indication and approval of the tutor and the PhD Board of Teachers, can be gained also attending conferences, workshop and short courses by other national and international institutions. The introduction to scientific research must end within the secon year of the PhD course.

Training plan
The 12 credits assigned for "the seminar and laboratory activities" are approximately subdivided as follows: 6 credits for seminar activities, or similar, and 6 credits for laboratory activities (performed in facilities provided by the PhD course or external structures) related to the research/thesis activity chosen by the student.

Thesis
In the second year, students will define in detail their research topic, will complete the related "state of the art", with particular reference to the problems still open, and will start to perform studies on the topics of their research, which will be terminated during the the third year. The activities related to the research/thesis can also be carried out abroad, using specific collaboration agreements already in force or created "ad hoc". Training activities will correspond to a commitment of at least 30 credits, of which at least 6 must be laboratory credits.

All the training activities will be recommended by the tutor, in accordance with the cultural address and the research/thesis subject chosen by the student, and will be approved by the Phd Board of Teachers. Notes
The training plan for the second year is oriented to a specialized training (for a total of 30 credits, including 3 freely-chosen credits), as well as to the work strictly related to the research/thesis subject chosen by the student (for a total of 30 credits). The student has to gain at least 24 credits (including 3 freely-chosen credits) by attending courses offered by universities and PhD schools, in Italy or abroad. Further 6 credits have to be acquired by attending seminars, or by the way of similar activities. A part of the required credits, on indication and approval of the tutor and the PhD Board of Teachers, can be gained also attending conferences, workshop and short courses by other national and international institutions, as well as summer schools. The required credits must be earned by the first quarter of the third year.

Notes
The training plan for the third year is primarily devoted to the conclusion of the research performed during the last two years and to the compilation of the thesis for a commitment corresponding to 51 credits, of which at least 12 must be laboratory credits. Within the first six months of the third year, the specialized training for a total of 6 credits gained attending advanced courses and 3 credits gained attending seminars, or through similar activities, must be finished.
