The head of Department ultimately and legally represents the Department; He is in charge of summoning and chairing either the Department and the Committee Councils; he is responsible for implementing resolutions. The Head of Department supervises compliance with the University Statute and the Department Regulation; he liaises with the academic and external bodies, exercising all his duties according to the laws, the University Statute and the Regulations.

Beginning November 1, 2016, Professor Maurizio Barbara has been appointed as Head of the Department of Neuroscience, Mental Health and Sense Organs (NESMOS), full professor in Diseases of the Visual System (scientific-disciplinary sector MED/30) at Sant' Andrea Hospital, ‘La Sapienza’ University of Rome.
