Project

Violence against women is now an important topic of public debate. As part of the prevention campaign, awareness-raising and educational projects are urgently needed. Research in the last 10 years has shown that violence against women is endemic in both industrialized and developing countries and its victims and perpetrators belong to all social classes. The idea of using red shoes to symbolize women being killed by an act of violence belongs to the Mexican artist Elina Chauvet, whose 2009 installation of hundreds of red shoes in Ciudad Juarez was an artistic response to the killing of her sister and the deaths of many other women in the town.
