From Europe to us: how the rules of the European Committee on animal wellness in scientific research are implemented in Italy
Thursday, January 20th 2021 - 3:00 pm (CET)
Seminar held online on Zoom platform
Live broadcast open to public on Sapienza Neuroscience YouTube channel
Topic of the Seminar
In each European country, animal experimentation is regulated by the national implementation of Directive 63/2010/EU whose object is the protection of animals used for scientific purposes, namely the protection of their welfare, the procedures of replacement, reduction and refinement (Principle of the 3Rs), the limitation of pain, suffering, distress, temporary or prolonged damage by means of good veterinary and breeding practices and the proper application of anesthesia and analgesia. The series of webinars by CIVIS neuroscientists will discuss the extent to which the European directive is differently implemented across European countries of the CIVIS Consortium, towards an ideal harmonization of the view and daily practice. This is the first seminar of the series. Prof. Cristina Limatola will illustrate how the rules of European Committee on animal wellness in scientific research are implemented in Italy.
This seminar is part of the series of CIVIS seminars: From Europe to us: how the rules of European Committee on animal wellness in scientific research are implemented in the CIVIS network of universities. Eight seminars are planned. Speakers will belong to eight CIVIS universities based on eight different European countries.
CIVIS is a European Civic University formed by the alliance of eight leading research higher education institutions across Europe. Click here for more info

Main scientific interest and results
1) Neuroprotective and neuromodulatory activity of the transmembrane chemokines CX3CL1 and CXCL16: in vivo and in vitro studies of the role of glial cells and adenosine (Cipriani et al., J Neurosci 2011; Rosito et al., J Neurosci 2012).
2) Functional modulation of GABAergic receptors in epileptic tissues and role of adenosine receptors (Roseti et al., PNAS 2008; Conti et al., Epilepsia 2011; ). 3) Functional characterization of nicotinic acetylcholine receptor-associated mutations identified in ALS patients (Sabatelli et al., Human Mol Gen 2009; Di Angelantonio et al., J Physiol 2011).
4) Role of calcium-dependent potassium channels in the migration of human glioma cells in in vivo and in vitro models (Sciaccaluga et al., Am J Physiol 2010).
