The Seminar

The Seminario Permanente di Studi Shakespeariani – Sapienza University of Rome Shakespeare Seminar Series – has been active for the last seven years. It started as a collaboration of the three public universities of Rome in preparation for the 2016 Shakespearean celebration and here at Sapienza the events were mainly organized by Professor Rosy Colombo, the leading promoter, and by Andrea Peghinelli.

Once the 400 Shakespeare anniversary was over, at Sapienza, professors Giuseppe Massara, Donatella Montini and Andrea Peghinelli kept the Seminar alive and continued to present events as an expression of contemporary state of the art in the study of Shakespeare and early modern theatre and drama. Our speakers have been a blend of established researchers, theatre professionals and also playwrights.

Last year, instead of a series of lectures, we organized a Colloquium, Voice and Voices in Shakespeare World that was held at Sapienza the end of February 2020.

For the 2021 series of the Seminar, which starts in January and will conclude its “renewed edition” in June 2021, Donatella Montini and Andrea Peghinelli, Convenors of the SPSS, decided to focus on Shakespeare’s History plays so as to explore various issues in the representation of history and identity.
