Project abstract:

The overall objective of the “Bioedilnanocarbon” project is implementing innovative systems for the protection and conservation of wooden products for green building, considering both the ancient wooden structures of historic buildings and the new generation products (lamellar and XLAM), in order to guarantee the prolongation over time of the function for which they were assigned (with particular reference to the structural function), contributing to the prolongation of CO2 storage in the structure, the reduction of greenhouse gases and energy efficiency. New opportunities in this sector come from the use of polymer-based nanomaterials able of conveying natural substances with biocidal activity to be used in preservative treatments on wood. In particular, the operative unit of the CIABC (Department of Chemistry of the Sapienza University of Rome) had as its objective the preparation of biopolymeric nanocarriers for the delivery of bioactive molecules with antifungal activity into construction wood which allow the use of a smaller quantity of synthetic antiseptics and increase its effectiveness. Finally, the project will include the creation of an innovative IoT system for monitoring environmental thermo-hygrometric conditions both on new generation wood composites (e.g. XLAM) and on archaeological wood.
