About us

The Sapienza Herbarium houses collections of dried plants of great scientific and historical value. With one million preserved specimens, this structure plays a fundamental role in documenting plant biodiversity and is, both nationally and internationally, an important reference center for scientific research in many fields, such as plant morphology, taxonomy, landscape history, genetics, and palynology. This extraordinary heritage is the result of the work of a large number of scholars and collectors who, since the early nineteenth century, have studiously contributed to its creation. Due to its layout, unlike a typical museum, it lacks an exhibition hall, while it has its own library to support research.
