Historical notes of the Institute and the attached library.

In 1941, the Institute of Economics and Finance and its Library were established within the Faculty of Law. Initially it also owned the Ugo Papi Fund but in the late 1960s it was transferred to the Lincei. Among the valuable works owned by the noteworthy library:
• The rare fund of Antonio De Viti De Marco distinguished economist and academic (Lecce 1858 Rome 1943). The collection of his writings is based on the most significant schools of thought of that period. There have been treaties on economics and monetary policy since the beginning of 1751. Even today some scholars, for their scientific research, make it the object of consultation.
The background also contains the original works of Maffeo Pantaleoni, donated directly to his friend De Viti de Marco by the author.
Maffeo Pantaleoni (Frascati 1857, Milan 1924) is still counted among the greatest European theoretical economists, so much so that his main work was compared by Bohm-bawerk (Austrian economist, Brno 1851 Vienna 1914) to that of the great French theorist of the economic balance Leon Walras (Évreux 1834 - Clarens-Montreux 1910).
Pantaleoni introduced his friend Vilfredo Pareto (Paris 1848 Céligny 1923), the most famous and cited of the Italian economists, to the studies of economics, he was the teacher and predecessor of Umberto Ricci (Chieti 1879 Il Cairo 1946), the only Italian economist mentioned in Franco Modigliani's Nobel Lecture (Rome 1918 - Cambridge, Mass, 2003). In turn, the latter is, at present, the only Italian awarded a Nobel in the discipline of Political Economy, and is a distinguished law graduate of Sapienza, with a thesis in Political Economy in '39.
In addition to Giuseppe Ugo Papi (Capua 1893 Rome 1989), former rector of the "Sapienza" and Academician of the Lincei, Giuseppe Di Nardi (Spinazzola 1911 - Rome 1992), Academician of the Lincei, Carlo Pace (Rome 1931 Rome 2003), top manager in important banks and development agencies, and politician and government man.
• The Cosciani Fund (partly lost) was kindly donated by the family. Cesare Cosciani (Trieste 1908 Rome 1985), was an illustrious student of finance science and took care of the fundamental principles of public finance. Currently the library is updated with publications on scientific subjects such as: Economics, Monetary Economics, Political Economy, Economic Policy, Tax Policies, Finance Science and Economic History.
In 2004 the Institute became a section configured within the Department of Legal Sciences.
In 2012 the structure was renamed Institute of Economics and Finance - Section of the Department of Legal, Philosophical and Economic Studies. . Administrative services are the responsibility of the Administrative Secretariat of the Department.
In 2019 change of name of the "Department of Philosophical and Economic Studies" to "Department of Legal and Economic Studies" with resolution of the Board of Directors - meeting of 18 April 2019.
The current Section Coordinator is Prof. Nicola Boccella.
