About us

In the current university system, the Department seeks to define its goals based on clinical, translational and basic research projects and with innovative but feasible proposals as well as on the excellence of results that have a socially useful spin-off. These objectives are applied both in research and in the training it offers.

The Department competes with structures, including private ones, on the national and international scene and also seeks to establish partnerships with these structures.

The Department currently represents the union of Obstetric and Gynaecological Sciences, Urological Sciences and Paediatric Sciences. In this way, it is possible to translate research objectives through these branches that have several points of contact. A Department that can express, through the systematic and transversal use of multiple competences and disciplinary specificities, in the richness of its own declinations, a new proposal. A complex structure in which new and articulated areas of research/experimentation and original didactic offers can be expressed at all levels (Cdl, Cdl magistralis, Schools of Specialisation, Masters, Doctorates, Higher Education).

The Department has given itself an organisational model in order to achieve:

  • the best conditions for expressing excellence in the teaching offering and in the results of research and experimentation;
  • a virtuous interaction between professors, researchers and structures that are able to provide services to improve the results of research/experimentation and teaching activities.

Concrete initiatives have been launched to improve the quality of internal services, research, experimentation and teaching, and to increase our competitive capacity in the network of the national and international university system. The objectives will be in continuity with decades of experience in past years. The implementation of the objectives will be matched by concrete actions that are attentive to interpreting internal and external changes at Sapienza.

In the current university system, the Department seeks to define its goals based on clinical, translational and basic research projects and with innovative but feasible proposals as well as on the excellence of results that have a socially useful spin-off. These objectives are applied both in research and in the training it offers.

The Department is resolutely pursuing the objective of giving itself a credible identity by assuming the specific organisational model of its structures:

  • in support of research
  •  in support of the virtuous relationship between experimentation and its teaching activities
  •  in support of relationship strategies with high-level national and international structures
  • in support, consequently, of all that is necessary to achieve the objectives underlying these strategies: from the organisation of teaching and research staff to that of spaces and equipment, from the organisation of service structures to the management of resources.

RESEARCH AND TEACHING AREA

The Department is characterised by the multidisciplinary expertise of its member professors and researchers, who belong to three different SSDs belonging to a CUN Area:

AREA 06 MEDICAL SCIENCES

 - MED/24 - Urological Sciences

-MED/38 . Paediatric Sciences

- MED/40 - Gynaecological - Obstetric Sciences.

The scientific-disciplinary contents concern research, research applied to teaching and experimentation on the entire field of pathologies of urological, gynaecological-obstetric and paediatric interest

In order to better carry out their research activities, lecturers and researchers are grouped into Sections and Research Units.

The Maternal Childhood and Urological Sciences Department is a University structure of the First Faculty of Medicine and Surgery of the University of Rome "La Sapienza".

In the paediatric field, the research, training and health promotion activities for children, carried out in an interdisciplinary perspective, involve neonatology and various branches of paediatrics.

Not only the child and the adolescent, but also their families are the recipients of the Institute's activities, as are the students of the disciplines taught there and the scholars involved in research. To all, the Department aims to offer the services and tools to meet their needs, with a view to constantly improving the quality provided.

The point of reference, the values, by which all the Institute's operators are inspired are enshrined in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (Convention on the Rigths of the Child), approved by the UN General Assembly on 20 November 1989 (ratified in Italy in 1991). Suffice it to mention art. 6 whereby States commit the maximum available resources to protect the life and healthy development of children, also through mutual cooperation; art. 19 whereby States adopt all legislative, administrative, social and educational measures to protect the child against all forms of violence, outrage or physical or mental brutality, abandonment or neglect, maltreatment or exploitation, including sexual violence.

The reference framework of values is not complete if we do not cite Article 33 of our Constitution, which states: 'Art and science are free and free is the teaching of them', meaning as teaching any manifestation, even isolated, of one's own thought that, concerning art and science, enlightens others on the development of culture and scientific and technical research.
