Graduation Exam 

  • For each academic year, 5 graduation sessions are organized by the Faculty. The graduation dates and the corresponding deadlines for online graduation application are resumed for the Academic Calendar 2023-24 (valid starting March 2024)

 FINAL EXAM: General InstructionsThe final exam of the Master Program consists of the preparation of a thesis on issues characterizing Chemical Engineering, elaborated by the student in an original form under the guidance of a tutor/supervisor.Assignment procedureThe student chooses the area/subject that he/she likes more and intends to cover for the thesis, and directly addresses the supervisor (generally when the number of exams still to be taken is about 2-3), checking for the availability of proposed subjects or, alternatively, proposing one himself/herself. Once the availability of the supervisor has been confirmed, the student is registered as “in tesi” and can start working on the assigned topic. Deadlines, activities and methods are agreed with the supervisor.TimeThe time of preparation of a Master thesis indicatively ranges from 5-6 months, depending on the type of thesis (see next) and on the student dedication (part-time or full-time commitment).Thesis preparation and dissertationThe thesis is prepared and written by the student, and then amended and corrected under the guidance of the supervisor. The final dissertation takes place as an oral presentation in front of the Graduation Commission (7 Professors), using power-point slides. The time available for the presentation is 15 min; a short discussion follows the presentation.Thesis typeThe final work can consist of:

  • an experimental research, to be developed in the laboratories of the department
  • a work of design and/or simulation of a plant, of an individual component, of a process or a physico-chemical phenomenon, to be developed with professional software available in the premises of the department or with the student, depending on the subject
  • one of the above, carried out as an external stage in a company or a research institution (depending on availability): the student will be assisted by both an external supervisor from the company and an internal supervisor from the Master Board.
  • a very complete (and very deeply discussed) literature review on a specific topic of Chemical Engineering.

Final GradesThe thesis grade (maximum of 7.5 points) is awarded by the Supervisor (maximum of 3.5 points) and by the Commission (max 4 points).The final grade of the Master Degree is the sum of:

  • the average grade of all exams (weighted by the credits), converted from …/30 to … /110
  • the points awarded by the Commission (max 4) and the Supervisor (max 3.5)
  • 0.25 points for each laude awarded to exams, up to 0.5 points
  • 2 points for thesis discussed within the last session of the second year of enrollment (usually in January) 
  • or 1 point for thesis discussed within the last session of the third year of enrollment (usually in January) 

 For the full grade (110/110) cum laude

  • the weighted average of the exams grade must be ≥ 103
  • the grade awarded by Commission + Supervisor must be = 7.5
  • the final average grade + thesis grade + bonus points must be 112

 Marks are rounded to the nearest tenth of a point (for example 88.44 = 88.4; 88.45 = 88.5). The maximum increase cannot exceed the calculated value (i.e. for a score resulting from the average grade of the exams + bonus + points from the commission = 109, 8 the graduation grade will be 109). Fac-simile copies for the format of the abstract, the thesis and the presentation are available in the download area
