Departmental Iconography

The ability to communicate is essential in an evolved society and is vital in the cultural and scientific fields. The Departmental Iconography Section (S.I.D.) of the "Pietro Valdoni" Department of Surgery was born from the need to produce quality iconographic contributions in the various forms of scientific and educational communication. His are deep roots, they come from the past, from that pillar of Italian and international surgery that was Pietro Valdoni. Testimony of this are the still very current treatise on surgical technique and the 16 mm films on his innovative operating techniques. Today new possibilities are offered to communication by new technologies. The Departmental Iconography Laboratory has made them its own, in order to be able to offer a product that is constantly in step with the times.

In this context, the documentation, through photography and film, of surgical interventions, new techniques and particular clinical cases, considerable attention, has always been taken care of.

An activity already started by Prof. P. Valdoni thanks to a technical collaborator of exceptional value such as Renzo Rinascente. Over the years, films of the highest value were thus made which documented the operating activity of Prof. P. Valdoni and of those who succeeded him in running the Department of Surgery (Prof. Paolo Biocca, Prof. Gianfranco Fegiz, Prof. Giampaolo Piat , Prof. Sergio Stipa, Prof. Sandro Tagliacozzo, Prof. Antonino Cavallaro, Prof. Adriano Tocchi, Prof. Giorgio De Toma and currently, Prof. Enrico Fiori).

Renzo Rinascente, the first technician, was followed by specialized technicians of the same caliber: Giovanni Percoco, Alberto Sciamplicotti, Fabrizio Giovanetti, Salvatore Mammoliti. The archive of the Departmental Iconography Section currently collects many films made from the 1950s to the present day and countless masters of various interventions.

To allow viewing of this material, safeguarding and re-evaluating it, the 35mm, 16mm film and magnetic tapes of the edited footage were digitized and restored. This material will be progressively made available through the Vimeo web channel "Department of Surgery", in a productive effort aimed at not dispersing an iconographic treasure of enormous value.
