Cosmic archaeology with the first black holesBlack holes of all flavors, from the stellar to the super-massive, start to form as early as galaxies do. In the near future, the James Webb Space Telescope will make an unprecedented step change in terms of our observational capabilities of early star formation and galaxy assembly. The next challenge will be to observe the nearly coeval dawn of black holes. The most massive among the black hole binary mergers detected by the LIGO/Virgo collaboration are already providing valuable constraints on the evolution of massive stars at high redshift. In this talk, I will discuss recent progresses in the theoretical modeling of the evolving population of massive black holes, from the lightest to the heaviest, and the large potential of future gravitational wave telescopes.
