She specializes in pre-industrial economic systems, with a special focus on Italy, as well as 20th-century European history. Her writings embrace a wide range of topics, including famines and food policies, institutions and long-term economic growth, the social sciences and colonial contexts, in particular the Italian colonies, colonization and decolonization, financial history, the history of tourism, international migration and economic history.
