Cultural Heritage and Archaeology of the Ancient Near East
In keeping with the educational objectives of the School of Specialization in Archaeological Heritage, the course aims to provide a deep knowledge of Ancient Near Eastern Archeology, material culture, and architecture, and of research topics and problems within the international scholarly scenario. In particular, the course focuses on protection and enhancement of the archaeological heritage, and museums in the regions of the Near East. During the course, research topics and cultural heritage protection and promotion will be discussed by presenting Sapienza’s projects in Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, and Palestine, as well as other international projects chosen as case studies. The course aims at providing a critical view of how Near Eastern Archaeology has changed from the beginning until today and of current challenges that researchers, archaeologists, and cultural workers are facing not only in the study but also in the communication and dissemination of the results of research.
The lectures are delivered in the classroom with the aid of PowerPoint presentations, excavation reports, and archaeological finds, but they can be attended also remotely. If necessary, the course will be delivered electronically. Attendance is mandatory to achieve expected learning outcomes. During the course, a visit to the Sapienza Museum of the Near East, Egypt and Mediterranean will be organized; participation in the latter activity is mandatory to pass the exam. Moreover, the course will include seminars, open discussion of suggested readings, and other assignments, such as short essays, review and comment of online resources on Near Eastern Archaeology and cultural heritage, and the realization of multimedia projects.
