Excavation campaign at Battifratta cave

Grotta Battifratta is located in the municipality of Poggio Nativo on the left bank of the Riano River, a minor tributary of the Farfa River, and along a lithoid travertine rock ridge. The cave is currently shaped like a rock shelter, with a narrow tunnel leading into an inner chamber. So far, two excavation campaigns (2021 and 2022) have revealed several phases of cave use in the Middle Palaeolithic, Middle Neolithic (late 6th-early 5th millennium B.C.), and Early and Middle Bronze Age (2nd millennium B.C.).
