Thornton, John
John Thornton is full professor of Roman History. Professor Thornton’s research interests are, on the one side, the history and historiography of the Hellenistic and Roman age; in this field, he has investigated different aspects and episodes of the Roman conquest of the Hellenistic world. As far as historiography is concerned, not only has he studied Polybius, but also Phylarchus, Strabo, Pausanias, Pompeius Trogus/Justin and Appian. On the other hand, John Thornton is also interested in the political, administrative, social and cultural history of Greece and Asia Minor from the Hellenistic Age to the first two centuries of the Roman Empire. In this field, he has also contributed to the interpretation of significant epigraphic documents coming from Gonnoi in Thessaly, Maroneia in Thrace, Aphrodisias in Caria and Patara in Lycia.
