    Aims: 

    The course introduces to the main international governmental and non-governmental institutions operating in Africa in the field of management, conservation and safeguarding of cultural and archaeological heritage. The course takes an in-depth look at the overall procedure for including an archaeological context in the programs of a number of organizations, such as UNESCO, ICOMOS, World Monuments Fund and Endangered Archives. It offers an overview of the main African archaeological sites on the UNESCO World Heritage List, in order to highlight the different strategies adopted by local communities, national institutions and international agencies, including cooperation projects. The course as a whole provides methodological tools and updated information to get a greater familiarity with the African cultural heritage and the institutions - in Africa, but also in Italy and Europe - that work on it.

    Course organization: 
    The course includes a series of lectures, together with seminars on specific themes. There will be a selection of students to participate to field activities in Africa (Tunisia, Kenya).
