Paleolithic archaeology
Consistently with the educational objectives of the Degree Program, the course aims to provide, in the context of PALEOLITHIC ARCHEOLOGY, knowledge and understanding that complement and strengthen the acquisitions from the previous cycles of studies, in order to make the student capable of addressing original questions in a research context, formulating assessments in a complex and articulated form, communicating the knowledge and processes that led to their acquisition, and studying the topics independently.
In the first part of the course we aim to deepen some topics of the current debate, exploiting the most recent publications in the discipline and discussing them in the form of a "Journal club".
In the second part of the course, a writing workshop will be organized with a specific focus on a theme chosen with the students among those covered in the first part. The final paper will be a research project.
As regards the bibliography, a reasoned syllabus will be provided at the beginning of the semester. If it is the first Paleolithic exam, it is advisable to also read the basic Syllabus already present on the teacher's page.
The teaching is associated with an annual lithic technology laboratory, open to all.
Furthermore, the teaching is associated with excavations in Uluzzo C (Middle-Upper Paleolithic, Nardò, Italy http://www.erc-success.eu/archaeological-sites/6-grotta-di-uluzzo/), Gotera (Middle Paleolithic, Ethiopia), Buia (Lower Paleolithic, Eritrea), Sierra de Capivara (Brazil, Archeology of the Primates). Participation in the excavations will follow a selection made on the basis of a formal application (cover letter and CV).
