Title: Search for the Higgs boson decay to a pair of muons with the ATLAS Experiment

Abstract: This seminar presents a search for the rare Higgs boson decay to a pair of muons as performed by the ATLAS Collaboration, using the full dataset collected at 13 TeV during Run 2 of the LHC and corresponding to 140fb-1. The main characteristics of the ATLAS detector as well as the basic concepts of muon reconstruction in ATLAS are described, given the central role played by muons in the search. The analysis performed by the ATLAS Collaboration is explained in detail, from the choice of categories (exploiting the typical signature of the four main Higgs boson production modes) to the techniques used for background estimation. The results from the search are finally presented, showing a first hint of the Higgs boson coupling to second generation fermions as the observed significance over the background-only hypothesis for a Higgs boson with a mass of 125.09 GeV is 2.0 standard deviations.
